Marriott International is planning to open 100 hotels by 2015, not worldwide, but in one country - India. With just 11 hotels in India as of late 2010 that means Marriott plans to increase its presence by almost 1,000 percent.
A bold move, but a smart one, too. According to Wikipedia, India is the world's second most populous country with 1.2 billion residents. And, The Economist reports that "some economists think India will grow faster than any other large country over the next 25 years."
1. The Plan
Marriott's ambitious expansion plan will bring seven of its brands to India, including the country's first Ritz-Carlton and first Fairfield. 23 hotels are expected to open between late 2010 and 2013. New management agreements will add another seven properties to that count over the same timeframe.
The global brand planted its first flag in India in 1999 with the opening of Goa Marriott. Since then, it has added its JW Marriott, Marriott, Renaissance, Courtyard and Marriott Executive brands.
