Planner Review: Omni Mount Washington

From , former About.com Guide

Omni Mount Washington in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire (best known for being the state's largest ski area) is proudly showing off a four-year, $60 million renovation and, I've got to say, they've reason to.

Nestled at the base of Mount Washington and surrounded by the expansive White Mountain National Forest, the new-and-improved (and much acclaimed) hotel still reflects the charm of its history while becoming more in line with the amenities of modern times.

Guest Accommodations

Guest rooms and suites (all 200 of them) received a new residential design with an eye to yesteryear.

A light color scheme was inspired by the wildflowers found just outdoors while landscape photography showing the beauty of the surrounding region was chosen to adorn the walls. The now standard hotel guest room amenity of flat-screen TVs also were added.

A new "Family Suite" provides the perfect way for business travelers to mix in a little pleasure by keeping loved ones close at hand. Covering 1,400 square feet, the "Family Suite" offers a master bedroom and two children's rooms, each featuring a twin bed and a whimsical decor.

Additionally, lighting fixtures influenced by a Thomas Edison design and wallpaper inspired by the Tiffany stained glass found throughout the property now brightens guest hallways. (If you're room isn't on the fourth floor, make sure to make a stop there to check out a restored Tiffany skylight dating back to the hotel's opening in 1902.)

Formal and Casual Dining

The Cave (once a prohibition-era speakeasy and pictured at left in its new role as a nightspot), Stickney's (a new "pub-style steakhouse" which replaces the hotel's billiards room) and Fabyan's Station (a family restaurant located in a former train station) all pair delectable cuisine with old-world flair. The hotel's main Dining Room also was enhanced.

Event Space

High on the hotel's must-do list was an expansion of its meeting space.

Event planners will now find an added 20,000 square feet of space as well as six new meeting rooms ranging from 800 to 3,600 square feet. Also new to the resort is the Jewell Terrace, a rooftop garden available for private functions.

In all, the resort now features 30,000 square feet of event space, including 18 meeting rooms, able to accommodate groups of up to 1,000. That now makes it one of the largest meeting facilities in Northern New Hampshire.

While not new to the property, the hotel's recently restored wrap-around veranda is also available for outdoor events.

And More...

In addition to all the changes noted above, the resort also added a 25,000-square-foot spa and salon, restored its award-winning, Donald Ross-designed golf course and added a woodland tour as well as a life-sized outdoor chess set for entertainment.
